Most growing Australian businesses do not set out to have messy HR. Contracts get written in a rush. Policies sit untouched for years. Modern Award classifications stay as they were when the role was first hired. Nothing looks urgent until an employee raises a concern, a Fair Work issue lands, or you try to hire your next manager and realise the foundations are not there.

An HR Health Check is how you find those gaps on purpose, before someone else finds them for you.

What is an HR Health Check?

An HR Health Check is an independent review of your employment documentation, workplace policies and people practices. It is sometimes called an HR audit. The point is not a thick report that sits in a drawer. It is a clear picture of where you stand under Australian employment law, and a prioritised plan for what to fix first.

It is a snapshot, not ongoing HR support. You get the diagnosis. What you do with it is up to you.

At Cornerstone Consulting Group, we built ours for growing businesses, typically with 20 to 100 employees, that want confidence their HR is still fit for purpose.

What does an HR Health Check include?

A proper review should look at how your documents and practices line up with the Fair Work Act, the National Employment Standards, and the Modern Awards that actually apply to your people. In practice that means:

Employment contracts. Are they current, enforceable, and an accurate reflection of the role? Older contracts often miss NES updates or include clauses that would not hold up.

Modern Award coverage and classifications. Are people on the right award and the right level? Misclassification is one of the most common (and expensive) issues we see.

Workplace policies. What is missing, outdated, or inconsistent with how the business actually runs? Psychosocial and conduct policies are a frequent gap.

HR documentation. Onboarding packs, position descriptions, performance templates, and the files you would need if a process was challenged.

How you manage people day to day. Informal habits that worked at 8 staff often create risk at 30.

You should leave with a written report, a prioritised action plan, and a debrief so the findings are explained in plain language, not HR jargon.

Signs your business needs one

You do not need a crisis. These are the usual triggers:

  • The business has grown and HR still looks like it did at half the headcount
  • Contracts or policies have not been reviewed in the last couple of years
  • You are unsure whether everyone is on the correct Modern Award
  • You have had a complaint, underperformance issue, or messy exit
  • You are about to hire managers, take on investors, or acquire a team
  • You want a fixed-fee view of the risk before you spend on a larger HR project

If two or more of those are true, you are in the window where a Health Check pays for itself.

Is an HR Health Check the same as hiring an HR consultant?

No. An HR consultant or outsourced HR function helps you run people processes week to week: recruitment, performance, employee relations. An HR Health Check is the diagnostic that tells you what is broken and in what order to fix it.

Plenty of businesses do the Health Check as a standalone piece of work. If you want help implementing the plan afterwards, that can sit on top. There should be no obligation to stay on as a client just to get the review.

What you should walk away with

A useful Health Check ends with four things:

  1. A written report of findings, ranked by risk
  2. Practical recommendations you can action internally if you want
  3. A debrief meeting so the report is actually understood
  4. A clear sense of what is urgent, what can wait, and what is already in good shape

If a provider cannot tell you how they prioritise findings, it is a document review, not a Health Check.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an HR Health Check take?

Most take four to six weeks, depending on headcount and how quickly documents are provided.

Is it a fixed fee?

Yes. You will know the fee before any work starts, based on the size and complexity of the business.

Do we have to implement everything you find?

No. The value is knowing where you stand. You can action it internally or ask for implementation support.

We already have an internal HR person. Is it still useful?

Often yes. An external review is useful precisely because they are not close to the work. It is a second set of eyes, not a replacement.

Know where your HR stands

If you are not sure whether your contracts, policies and Award coverage have kept up with the business, that uncertainty is the reason to do a Health Check. Book a short discovery call and we will tell you whether it is the right fit. No pushy sales process, and no obligation beyond the review.
